10 Reasons Why I Love Johnny Cash

There’s a lot to love about country legend Johnny Cash. Here are just 10 of those reasons why I personally love him. Johnny Cash was an incredible storyteller and he paved the way for many other country artists who stepped onto the scene after him.

1. He was never afraid of being himself

As the picture shows, he was never afraid of letting you know who he is. He didn’t care what people thought of him, he didn’t ever sell out. He sang songs that he cared about and that meant something to him. That’s something to be celebrated.

2. He knows where he came from.

Johnny Cash: Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk the Line, Don't Take Your Guns to Town, Tennessee Flat Top Box, Hey Porter, Big River, Get Rhythm, Man in Black, Give My Love to Rose, etc...

This Blank On Blank interview shows that Cash was very aware of his gospel roots. He also automatically credits gospel music and is not shy about admitting that it’s a big part of his music. He also admits that he wasn’t called to be a preacher, he was called to share and connect his songs with other people.

3. He helped out with the new rebellion

Mamma gave me Barbra and daddy gave me Johnny

The outlaws in country music is a big part of what the genre is about. Johnny Cash was a big leader in that whole thing. In my opinion, he gave a face to the rebellion thing and made it kind of cool for everyone else.

4. His bond with Elvis

Johnny Cash & Elvis. They are so young. We didn't get to watch Elvis age, he died too young. Johnny Cash was an icon til the day he died.

In the interview I already mentioned, he talks about how he and Elvis didn’t talked about anything other than gospel music. Well, besides girls, but mostly gospel music. The two shared similar roots and therefore bonded over it while they toured together early on in Cash’s career.

5. He valued learning

Expand your mind.

I gained even more respect for the icon when I learned of this quotes and his general stance on learning. He believes in learning more and more and just expanding your mind. I think people don’t stress this enough and it’s really cool that someone as awesome and iconic as Johnny Cash believed in this.

6. He fought his demons

Be grateful for the time you have.

The man in black had a lot of demons due to his alcoholic past and also his struggle to be a good father. Despite all this, Johnny didn’t become a member of the 27 club, he didn’t become a tragic star who never lived long enough to see what an impact his music made. Cash fought through all of his issues for a long time but he never gave up. He kept fighting and that’s why he lived a long and complete life.

7. He forgave himself and moved on

Forgive yourself.

This obviously played a big part in why he was able to fight his demons and move on from his past. He forgave himself, something difficult but not impossible to do. He kept moving on in his life which is something that you can’t help but respect him for doing.

8. He wasn’t distracted by material possessions

Avoid materialism.

He obviously wasn’t poor but he was wise about how he spent his money. He stuck to the simple things in life, hence his predominately black clothing of choice. This quote pretty much sums it all up.

9. He kept his priorities in order

Keep your priorities in order.

Now that’s how you make a to do list.

10. His love for June was the cutest thing EVER

It's always the small things that we end up missing the most when its gone.

Letter transcript:

June 23 1994

Odense, Denmark.

Happy Birthday Princess,

We get old and get use to each other. We think alike. We read each others minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes take each other for granted.

But once in awhile, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the #1 Earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much.

Happy Birthday Princess.

John

There’s a reason why that letter was voted the most romantic love letter of all time. Johnny Cash talks about his love for June in the most simple yet beautiful way. This makes it so obvious as to why we often say that we want a love like Johnny and June. Who doesn’t? The couple was straight up perfect.

Turn Up The Albums

I’m going to make a complete playlist sometime soon but here’s some of my favorite albums to just turn up all the way and dance around to. You can listen while driving around with your friends or just listening by yourself! Whatever you choose to do, these are the albums you should do it to.

Charli XCX- Sucker

This album is best listened to while taking a road trip with your best friends or dancing around your room with your friends. It’s best to listen to this while surrounded by people you care about because it’s just so much more fun that way. “Break The Rules” is the fun and danceable skipping class anthem you can’t help but love. Charli XCX just puts out hit after hit and there’s not a skippable song on this album!

Ariana Grande- My Everything

This album put out by former Broadway star and vocal powerhouse Ariana Grande doesn’t disappoint. Not all of these songs are upbeat, some are gorgeous ballads that really showcase her voice. The sound here reminds us of a throwback to the 90’s. She has a vintage style to her but it never gets old. The highlight songs are definitely “Problem” and “Bang Bang.” These are also the biggest and most pop sounding songs but it can be fun to just let all your problems go and dance to pop music.

One Direction- Midnight Memories

I know, I know you guys probably think I’ve lost my mind by putting this on the list. However, I can’t resist these five British (And one Irish) boys. This isn’t there most recent album, Four is but I prefer Midnight Memories. Largely due to the fact that this album is filled with songs that you can just sing to the top of your lungs. Four doesn’t really have any of those type of songs. The title track of Midnight Memories is a fun song to listen with at a sleepover with your best friend while you just talk and reflect on all the good times. “Happily” and “Best Song Ever” are two more songs that I can’t help but love. As is “Little Black Dress” and “Diana.” I’m also a big fan of the song “Alive,” which is on the deluxe edition of the album. Whether just the name of the band makes you cringe or swoon, this is a great album to jam to.

Haim- Days Are Gone

Talk about sister power, these three sisters are the coolest. They are frequently compared to the ’70s classic rock band Fleetwood Mac. However, I think they’ve created their own sound for this new generation. Every song is filled with awesome catchy lyrics and the music is just unbelievably amazing. It’s pretty much impossible not to be charmed by the song “The Wire,” or for that matter, any song by the trio. The album is stacked with track after track of songs that you’re bound to love and share with others.

Vampire Weekend- Modern Vampires of the City

Vampire Weekend is a small town indie band that reached an unpredictable amount of success. Lead singer Ezra Koenig and company has a unique sound that sets them apart. “Ya Hey” is definitely one of my favorite tracks off of the album, but “Diane Young” is at a close second. Part of the bands charm is that they don’t release ballad after ballad, instead they have lots of songs with funky and cool beats. How can you not love them?

Spotlight On: Jordan Catalano

18jkib7sv2ox4jpg

Jordan Catalano from My So-Called Life was a total dreamboat. Yes, he had the looks part down but there wasn’t all that much depth too him. Jordan wasn’t exactly the sharpest crayon in the crayon box. I always felt sorry for Brian but I always wanted Angela to end up with Jordan simply because Brian got on my nerves. You got to admit, annoying or not, Brian certainly treated her with a hell a lot more respect than Jordan ever did.

The majority of Jordan’s appeal comes from his looks so I’m not even going to try to deny it. He has learning problems which set him back and frustrate him. He doesn’t want people to think he’s stupid but he doesn’t try to stop them. Instead, he basically just struggles in silence. He’s lucky to have Brian help him out with his schoolwork and with getting Angela back even though he’s not appreciative of that at all.

The reason why it really doesn’t matter that Jordan is so well liked because of his looks is because that’s what a lot of teen girls like. Our first crush may not be on the most intellectual guy. I can’t speak on behalf of all girls but this is what I’ve personally found in my own life and in those closest to me. We’re drawn to the popular angsty teen guy because that’s part of who we want to be. We may be a really good girl who’s never done anything dangerous in her whole life but we don’t let that side show. We dream of rebelling with the hot James Dean type. He rebels against his surroundings and that draws the girl in.

Angela maintains her fascination with Jordan throughout the entire first and only season. This is more than just a crush for Angela – Jordan is everything to her. Is this the right decision? Well, it is to Angela and that’s all that really matters at the end of the day since she’s the one forced to live with her choices. Jordan screws up big time – he sleeps with Angela’s best friend. He does this mostly due to the fact that Angela won’t put out and her friend does after the both had been drinking a lot. Setting the plots and storylines and aside and looking at strictly the facts, Jordan is screwed up. And Angela is okay with that and so therefore we’re okay with that too.

Pros and Cons to Being In a Relationship

Sometimes it can be hard to determine whether or not you’re ready to be in a relationship. It depends a lot on particular circumstances. It’s hard to tell someone what to do or not do when all the circumstances aren’t known. This is just my list of the pros and cons to being in a relationship.

Pros:

Having someone to comfort and support you.

This is a major plus that I always miss when I’m not in a relationship. Knowing that someone is willing to run errands for you and drive to come see you and show you any kind of support possible is an incredible feeling. It sucks whenever that’s no longer there.

Someone to talk to.

This may be different for some people, but I love just having a boyfriend to talk to. He’s pretty much obligated to text you back and let you know he’s going to bed or tell you if he can’t come to his phone for a few hours. When you’re no long together, all that changes and it can be hard. If you’ve never dated and are thinking whether or not you want to be involved with this person, just think about the honeymoon phase. That’s a glorious period when he pays attention to you and shows interest but that ends at some point. Use your own judgment about whether or not you think this honeymoon period will end or not.

Getting to do sweet things for each other just to show how much you care.

There are some gifts and stuff you might buy a significant other that’s kind of weird to buy someone you’re not dating. When you’re in the awkward talking stage where you’re not sure where you’re going, it’s important to keep in mind just how much you’d do for this person. If the answer is not a whole lot, you might want to think more about the state of the relationship and where it’s heading.

Something to talk about with your friends.

Talking about boys with your friends is always the best. It can always make you feel like the odd one out when you don’t have a boyfriend. However, don’t feel pressured to jump into a relationship you’re not ready for. This is just a plus to brag about how sweet and awesome your boyfriend is if you’re ready to take things to that place.

It’s something extremely mutual.

This should be an obvious one. But sometimes guys may jump into something or even you might jump into it due to a number of different reasons. You know deep down whether or not you’re doing something for the right reasons. You can tell his deal based on his past relationships and don’t get too caught up on talking about the future. For instance, if he’s just gotten out of a relationship that’s fairly long term (3 months or longer) then don’t go there. He’s just looking for some kind of rebound and no one wants to be that girl.

Cons:

Feeling like you have someone to impress.

Looking cute all the time or feeling like you have to live up to the image of his ex or just the girls around in general. It can really suck and put a damper on the relationship but also on your own self-esteem. Avoid that at all costs.

When life gets in the way.

It can be stressful when you can’t control your plans. Like if one of you is super busy and you hardly get to see each other. This applies more to long term but sometimes even those who live close can find themselves barely getting any quality time.

The drama and fights.

It may just be me but it seems like a lot more fighting and drama happens once the relationship is official. You have more to argue about since your boyfriend and girlfriend and become more controlling and needy in a sense. Again, this might just be a Rachel thing but I’ve found this to happen in previous relationships. If I felt like I wasn’t good enough for him or something, I’d always fight and I don’t think that’d happen so frequently if we would’ve stayed in the talking stages for a while longer.

Jealousy!

This is by far the biggest con and yeah, it can happen when you’re talking but I feel like the green monster comes out more when it’s made official. When you aren’t together, you feel as if it’s not your place to say anything if you feel like he’s interested in someone else. He isn’t yours so why should you care in the first place? Is something we always ask ourselves at that point. While that still sucks, being together makes it even more serious. You get jealous over any girl he even glances. Again, I’m basing this on me and I get jealous over everything that a guy speaks to BASICALLY. I get jealous of ex girlfriends and all that. But, the jealousy can be overwhelming at times which just causes unnecessary stress and tension.

Guide to Crushes

This is a tentative guide to having crushes. Having a crush is such a devastating and overwhelming feeling. What are you supposed to do when you have a crush on someone that you’re not likely to end up with? What I mean is, the person we have our first crush on is typically unattainable. Maybe I’m just speaking from my own experiences here but that’s what I’ve found to be true. These are some tips on how to deal with having a crush on whoever it might be. Take what you will from this “guide.”

1. Don’t be ashamed of it.

Let’s just say you have a crush on your older brother’s best friend. (Again, this is just what I’ve felt.) Don’t be embarrassed because it’s okay to have a crush on someone, even if you really can’t be with them. But don’t be like me and announce it everywhere you go. Take from it what you will and maybe even doodle in your notebook or something. You don’t have to tell everyone you know.

2. Don’t borderline stalk the kid.

Stalking isn’t a good method of getting this kid’s attention. You’ll just end up scaring him off and rightfully so. He’ll likely be flattered that you like him but don’t expect him to be your Knight in Shining Armor.

3. Crushes are supposed to suck.

Crushes are your first experience with really liking someone. It’s unlikely that it’ll develop into something more. If it does, then you are much luckier than I am. Don’t be devastated if it doesn’t work out for you. There will be other guys that you will feel the same way and even deeper feeling that they will return and that’ll be some of the best experiences of your life. It can only go up from having this crush.

4. Move on

Some crushes last a REALLY long time. Sometimes it really hurts not to be able to tell the other person how you feel. But sometimes we just can’t tell them for whatever reason. I think the best way to get over that is to move on and notice someone else that is willing to be with you and give you a really nice relationship. A lot of the time, crushes are going to hurt. I know that I’ve said that over and over again but I can’t say it enough. I just think that’s really important to keep in mind.

Best Celebrity Couples

These are just a few celebrity couples out there that have seemed to really last. Who knows what the future holds, but these love stories have given just the slightest bit of hope.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z

beyonce-and-jay-z

I feel like they have been together for forever. But they still look Crazy In Love despite all the rumors that have happened over the past year or so. Bey and Jay are still going strong. While all the while raising the cutest daughter ever. What relationship could be better really?

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian

kim and kanye

People have varied opinions when it comes to this relationship. All I have to say is I definitely believe in this relationship. If any girl could tie Kanye West down for this long, she must be pretty important.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

Could there be a cuter couple? These two should never change.

Victoria and David Beckham

The couple is just a force to be reckoned with. They are one of the longest lasting couples on the list. They also make really cute babies. They seem to just balance each other out. Plus they both have killer model looks and just altogether perfect for each other.

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck

Jennifer-Garner-and-Ben-Affleck

These two seem perfect for each other. The chemistry between them is undeniable. I really couldn’t picture either of them with anybody else. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are definitely my relationship goals for sure.

Leighton Meester and Adam Brody

2014 Tony Awards - Arrivals

My younger self should’ve been beyond heartbroken that Seth Cohen got married to someone that wasn’t me or Summer Roberts. But Adam Brody married Blair Wardolf so I suppose that’s okay with me. Both of them are beautiful and deserve to be happy.

Tina Fey and Jeff Richmond

alg-tina-fey-jpg

Even though she’s taller than him and it may look weird sometimes, they are seriously adorable. Tina and her composer husband have been together for what seems like forever in Hollywood years. They seem to work so well together and that’s something you love to see.

Angelia Jolie and Brad Pitt

AngelinaJolie5-060210-0001

Known for being a powerhouse couple, few Hollywood couples can come to the power couple status of Bradgelina. Who doesn’t want their kind of relationship? They are both perfect.

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake

Two beautiful people that actually belong together. That’s exactly what these two are and it just warms my heart. It makes me even happier that Jessica is pregnant and it brings me comfort that they are bringing a baby into this world.

Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally

Megan Mullally, Nick Offerman

Nick and Megan are two of the funniest human beings so them being together is absolutely hilarious. I love how silly they act around each other. I have to admit that they are definitely one of my favorite celebrity couples.

Sarah Dessen Books and Teen Love

Sarah Dessen Wallpaper

Sarah Dessen is one of my favorite authors. I’m a little embarrassed to admit it. Not because her writing is bad or anything, but because it’s young adult romance books and sometimes it can be considered a guilty pleasure to admit that you totally love them. I’m not going to be ashamed to admit my love anymore. What I really want to say in this post is what these books have to say about teen lust and love and just relationships between teens in general.

“This Lullaby” is a book about Remy, a 18-year-old girl who’s father she never knew wrote a one hit wonder song dedicated to her that she still earns some money off of. She doesn’t believe in love due to watching her mom never really find love. Dexter is a musician she meets that has encountered the same experiences with his mom. Unlike Remy, he has the opposite belief and he is a hopeless romantic and his belief in love flips Remy upside down. What this book says about love is that sometimes it happens with your complete opposite. But you have to take the risk and let it just happen.

“The Truth About Forever,” Macy accepts chaos as she lets Wes into her life. This says a lot about just letting things happen. Note a theme? This Lullaby for the most part had the same theme. Most of the books have a main character who is either really serious, perfect, rejected, and some other similar characteristics. She’s the type of girl who needs reminded of her childlike qualities and being able to truly experience fun. “Along For The Ride” is about Auden, yet another girl who is serious about her studies and not much else. Her mom is a college professor and her dad is a writer. They split up when she was fairly young. In general, Auden was forced to mature at a young age. She never experienced a childhood and instead turned to focusing on her studies and being the best in her class. She spends the summer at the beach with her dad, his new wife, and their new baby daughter. Auden meets Eli who shows her another side to life, a fun side and with him, she experiences her childhood for the first time.

Sarah Dessen’s books are so special to me because they show a whole different side of teen romance. It’s definitely one I’ve personally never experienced. But I love how it takes me to a different place whenever I read them and it gives me a chance to dream. The books may not prepare you for the real world of teen dating, but they give you a chance to get away from reality for a little while. If you haven’t read any books by Sarah Dessen, you should definitely give it a chance.
